Ask the Singles: You Got Paired as a Random — and the Group Ahead Is Filming Their Swing
One weekly question. Four singles. What do you do when you're the add-on and the twosome ahead is a content studio?
This week's question
I got added as a single to a threesome I don't know, and the group ahead is a twosome filming swing videos from three angles. Do I ask to play through, wait for the marshal, or just accept my new life on the bench?
— Waiting on 6 (and also hole 1)
Waiting, you have three options.
- Ask to play through. Politely, from a reasonable distance, hat in hand.
- Wait for the Marshal. The Marshal has a flag and a radio. The radio isn't connected to anything. He'll get there eventually, look at the situation, and say "Busy one today, huh?" That's his whole job.
- Accept it. You're outside. You're not at work. Sit on the bench, read the plaque (hole 6 is usually "In Memory of Big Ron"), and think about how lucky you are to be stuck here instead of anywhere else.
I pick option 3 every time, then option 1, then I go get a hot dog. Also: if you just got paired, you're furniture for three holes. Polite furniture. Help look for balls. Don't ask why anyone is called Moose. By hole 4 you're either "Okay, Single" or the punchline. Either way, you're in.
Ask once. Then play ready golf.
If they wave you up, go. If they don't, stay ready and stop narrating your suffering. Filming a swing from three angles is not a pace-of-play strategy. Six words for them: Hit it. Find it. Walk.
As for being the random single: say "good shot" when it is, "that'll play" when it isn't, and keep your card honest. The rest is etiquette, not a TED Talk.
Bro first of all congrats on getting out. Second: if the twosome ahead is doing a full production, ask to play through like a normal person — smile, wave, don't be weird about it.
If they say no, whatever. Put a podcast on low (not the speaker; speaker stays respectful near strangers), help your new group look for balls, and learn the nicknames by accident. Being the add-on is actually elite. Zero social homework. Maximum golf.
Also: three camera angles is crazy. One angle is already a lifestyle.
I have been the guy left at the starter hut. Being paired with strangers is not a demotion — it's a pipeline. Treat it like a warm intro: handshake, first names, offer to buy a sleeve of range tokens you will never use.
On the film crew ahead: I'd ping them once, professionally. "Mind if we play through when you have a sec?" If they keep rolling, I wait, answer one email on mute, and reframe it as outdoor networking. The marshal will arrive eventually with decorative authority. Until then, you're still getting reps. Q4 can wait. This putt can't.
